The Godwin-Austem family of Shalford

The Austen family have been a part of Shalford's history since the late 16th century. The family were the owners of Shalford House until the early 20th century and also owned many other properties in the village and beyond. Members of the family achieved distinction in a variety of fields, including mountaineering, natural history and military exploits. The Godwin family name was added during the 19th century.
