George Mallory was a mountaineer, who took part in the 1921, 1922 and 1924 expeditions to Mount Everest, to conduct a thorough reconnaissance of the mountain and determine the most viable route to the summit, hoping to be the first to reach the top. Mallory died on the mountain – but was he still on his way up, or was he on his way down, having reached the summit?
